Nutrition Quickie:  Why Is Portion Control So Important?

I am Registered Dietitian Jayson Hunter and here is your Nutrition Quickie for today.  Apply it and strengthen your nutritional foundation with multiple Quickies like this.

Calorie intake is a key factor in weight control and health.

By controlling your portions, you are more likely to avoid consuming too many calories.

There are many simple strategies to control portion size.

You can use smaller plates which means smaller-than-normal servings, then wait 20 minutes before you return for more.

Another strategy is measuring portion size with your hand. A sample meal would look like this.  For most people limit the portion to 1 fist-sized portion of carbs, 1–2 palms of protein and 1–2 thumb-sized portions of healthy fats.

Bottom line is be aware of portion sizes especially if you are wanting or trying to lose excess fat.
